About the 1901 census

The 1901 census was taken on the night of Sunday 31 March, 1901. The following information was gathered:

The parish was split into 6 Enumeration Districts:

Enumeration District 1

Part of the Civil Parish of Forgan and of the School Board District of Forgan.
The northern boundary of this enumeration division extends from the South Lodge of Tayfield along the Kirk Road next to but excluding Waterston Crook, and thence along the railway line to the service road which goes under the railway at Woodhaven.
The western boundary commences at and runs along the service road to and including the Flass Farm and cottar houses on said service road, thence to Newton Hill, including the Newton Farm, cottar houses and smithy, being the western boundary line of the Parish of Forgan and dividing the Parishes of Forgan and Balmerino.
The southern boundary line extends from the Newton Hill eastwards to the Bogton, the houses of which on the north side only and called Bogearn belong to Forgan Parish and form part of the boundary line between Forgan and Kilmany. This boundary is continued from the Bogton by the Links and Morendy Woods to Morendy Cottages, separating the parishes of Forgan, Logie and Leuchars, and meeting the southern extremity of the eastern boundary, close to but excluding Pickletillem and Comerton Home and cottages attached thereto.
The eastern boundary of this division extends along the line of the main road leading from Leuchars to Newport and includes along the line St Fort smithy, Forgan schoolhouse, Strawberry Bank, cottar houses, and ends where this district begins - viz. south Lodge of Tayfield.
In the centre of this District are St Fort House and servants houses connected therewith, Home Farm and cottar houses, the Farms of West and South Friarton and cottar houses, Knockhill House, Seggieden, St Fort Station and Tayfield Mains.
The above Division includes the whole of the South Eastern portion of the 3rd Ward of the Parish as defined in Minutes of County Council dated 19th October 1900.

Enumeration District 2

Part of the Civil Parish of Forgan and of the School Board District of Forgan.
The northern boundary of this enumeration district extends from the Newport Burgh boundary at Woodhaven Pier and thence along the sea coast to Wormit Bay.
The western boundary runs from that point along the boundary between Forgan and Balmerino Parishes to Newton Hill.
The southern boundary is the northern boundary of No 1 Enumeration District, commencing at Newton Hill and ending at the aforesaid service road where it crosses below the railway at Woodhaven and thence east along the railway to the Newport Burgh boundary.
The eastern boundary commences where the southern boundary ends at said Burgh boundary and runs in a straight line to Woodhaven Pier.
Within this district are the houses at Woodhaven to the west of but excluding David Lindsay's house, houses at Scroggieside, and the whole of the populous village of Wormit. It includes also the farms and cottar houses of Woodhaven and Wormit, houses at Waterworks and in Wormit Bay and the houses in connection with the Bee Appliance Manufactory on the main road south of Wormit Farm.
This division includes the whole of the Second Ward of the Parish as defined in Minutes of County Council dated 19th October 1900.

Subsequent note (Census Office, Edinburgh, 22 Sept. 1903): The whole of the area enumerated in this book except the part in Schedules 184 - 188 inclusive, was annexed to the Burgh of Newport in 1903.

Enumeration District 3

Part of the Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish of Forgan and of the quoad sacra Parish of Newport and of the School Board District of Forgan.
The western boundary of this enumeration district commences on the Cupar Road at the South Lodge of Tayfield and runs along the line of the Newport Burgh boundary and thence following that boundary to the River Tay.
The northern boundary extends thence eastwards along the riverside to the boundary between the Parishes of Forgan and Ferryport-on-Craig.
The eastern boundary extends from the River Tay along the boundary between said two parishes till it joins Leuchars Parish boundary on the east of Morton Farm, thence southward following the boundary between Forgan and Leuchars to a point near Comerton Home on the public road from Leuchars to Newport.
The western boundary is said public road from that point to foresaid South Lodge of Tayfield.
Within this district are the farms and cottar houses of Northfield, Causewayhead, The Cliff, Burnside, The Morton, Ninewells, Lawhouses and Kirktonbarns, The Manse and Glebe, East Friarton, Myreside, Roseberry, Twinkletree house, Inverdovat and cottar houses, and gas works and houses on the Tayport Road.
This division includes the whole of the remainder of the 3rd Ward of the Parish as defined in Minutes of County Council dated 19th October 1900.

Enumeration District 4

Part of the Police Burgh of Newport, of the Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish of Forgan, of the quoad sacra Parish of Newport and of the School Board District of Forgan. This enumeration district comprises the western half of the Burgh of Newport.
The northern boundary is the Firth of Tay and extends from and includes Black's Land or Old Granary opposite the east end of High Street Newport, to Woodhaven Pier.
The western boundary extends from Woodhaven Pier along the burgh boundary to the railway line thence east along to and including Waterston Crook.
Its southern boundary extends from Waterston Crook along the Kirk Road to the east end of that road.
Its eastern boundary is the main road from the end of the said Kirk Road down to Black's Land foresaid at the east end of High Street Newport.
It includes Tayfield House Home Farm and cottar houses and North and South Lodges, and house for invalids, Westwood House and Lodge, Kinbrae House and Lodge, Belmore House and Lodge, the houses on both sides of Woodhaven road, part of Woodhaven, Netherlea, new houses in Westfield, Alma Terrace, Wellgate Park, Woodmuir Park, new houses at West Station, Kilnburn Place, Kilnburn Terrace, Kilnburn Villas, Scott Terrace, dwelling houses over shops in High Street, Gas Lane, Newport Hotel, and houses at Pier Head and Boat Brae, Tayfield Cottages, Seabraes and Chapel House.
The above division includes the whole of the Western half of the 1st Ward of the Parish as defined in Minutes of County Council dated 19th October 1900, being the western half of the Burgh of Newport.

Enumeration District 5

Part of the Police Burgh of Newport, of the Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish of Forgan, of the quoad sacra Parish of Newport and of the School Board District of Forgan. This enumeration district comprises the eastern half of the Burgh of Newport.
The northern boundary is the Firth of Tay.
Its western boundary is the same as the eastern boundary of No 4 enumeration district.
Its eastern boundary is the western boundary of No 3 enumeration district.
It contains Darvel Lodge, Linden Avenue, Norwood Terrace, Albert Street, Laurel Terrace, Thornbank, Youngsdale Place, Station House, Struan Place, Myrtle Terrace, Hillside Crescent, St Phillans Place, William Street, Robert Street, James Street, Tay Street, Union Street, Union Terrace, King Street, Queen Street, Woodbine Terrace, Maryfield Terrace, Bloomfield, Bellevue Terrace, Tay Terrace, Woodriffe Terrace, Prospect Terrace, Tayview Terrace, and the farm and cottar houses of Craighead.
The above division includes the whole of the remainder of the 1st Ward of the Parish as defined in Minutes of County Council dated 19th October 1900, being the eastern half of the Burgh of Newport.
