1841 Census

Commentary on the 1841 census of Forgan parish

Enumeration District 1 : The Enumerator's Walk through the villages with present-day locations in italics. The route can be followed using the 'view all 1841 address records' option on the 1841 page. Addresses on the 1841 census are minimal.

Marytown village is the area comprising Tay Street, Union Street, King Street, Queen Street, William Street, Robert Street and James Street. The enumerator's walk starts at Tay Street then zig-zags up the hill ending at Queen Street and Gowrie Street.

Newport village goes from High Street via the ferry pier area along West Road to the Yellow Castle.

Woodhaven village starts at Fishers Cottage, St. Fort Road and goes west to Wormit Church.

Conventions used in this transcription

Any material not part of the original, is enclosed in [square brackets].

Schedule numbers were not used in 1841. I have created numbers to identify each household. They are therefore enclosed in [square brackets].

Birthplace: if born in Fife - FIF; in another part of Scotland - SCO; in England - ENG; in Ireland - IRL. Nobody in Forgan had been born in foreign parts.

Households: Each household was terminated with a double stroke (//) and therefore started with the terminating double stroke of the previous household. The main family was separated from servants and other occupiers by a single stroke(/). In this transcription, the strokes are shown as follows: In the Household View, after the address information, the starting // is given. The separating / and terminating // are given at the end of the line of information about the last person in the appropriate group. This is different from all the other census transcriptions included on this site.

Married women: Two married women also gave their maiden names. To be consistent across the whole site, I have listed them by their maiden surname followed by their married surname in (brackets).
