House Names & Old Addresses in Newport and Wormit
Until complete and consistent street numbering was introduced in 1964, nearly all houses in Newport and Wormit were known only by their name. It can therefore be very difficult to track down an address in present-day Newport-on-Tay when all you have is the name of the house. A large number of the house names remained fixed through successive changes in ownership of the property.
As a message boy in the town in the 1960s, I had a detailed working knowledge of the various house names - in those days one had to deliver groceries to 'Jones, Newstead' or 'Willocks, Sunnybank' with no further clue as to the whereabouts of the address.
The house names listed here have been gathered from many sources including street directories, gate posts, fanlights, valuation rolls and personal knowledge.
The list contains over 2500 house names and addresses up to 1967. Any subsequent changes have not been included.
Some streets or blocks of houses had numbers prior to 1964, but they were changed when the new numbering system was introduced. The old numberings can also be searched in this list.
Several things to be borne in mind:
- On this site, there is a property cut-off in 1967. Any property built after 1967 will not be listed here.
- If an address (street and number) has not changed, it will not be displayed here.
- Street numbering was changed in 1964. This page only refers to the old numbers.
- If you know the present-day address, go to the present-day addresses.
The lists displayed will show house names first, followed by old addresses. Following the link Location will lead on to a further page with information about the property.
There is a separate list of old street names with their current equivalents.
